How to Choose a Dog Sling Carrier: Sizing, Safety and Who It Suits
Posted on October 25 2026
A good sling keeps your small dog snug against you, calm and off the ground, while both your hands stay free for coffee, shopping bags or the lead of your other dog. It's simple gear, but getting the size and fit right makes all the difference. This guide covers who a sling suits, how to choose the right size, and how to use one safely.
Is a sling right for your dog?
Slings work best for small dogs and cats up to about 6kg. Here's who our customers use them for most.
- Puppies before their vaccinations are finished. Vets advise keeping young puppies off public ground and away from unknown dogs until their vaccination course is done. A sling lets them see, hear and smell the world safely in your arms during that important socialisation window.
- Senior dogs and short legs. Older dogs, or little dogs who tire on long walks, can ride the last stretch home.
- Anxious dogs. Being held close helps many nervous dogs settle in busy places like markets, train stations or the vet waiting room.
- Places that ask for pets to be carried. Some cafés and shops only welcome pets that stay off the floor. Rules vary, and public transport may need an enclosed carrier instead, so check before you go.
- Cats. Calm cats can ride in a sling too, for trips to the vet or the courtyard.
A sling isn't the right choice for dogs over 6kg, for riding a bike or scooter, or as a car restraint. In the car, use a proper harness or crate.
Getting the size right: it's sized to you
This is the part most people don't expect. Sling sizes match the wearer's height and build, not the dog. The strap length isn't adjustable, so the right size sits your dog at a comfortable height on your body.
| Size | Best for wearers | Sling length |
|---|---|---|
| Small | Under 1.65m and under 55kg (women's XS–S) | 65cm |
| Regular | 1.65–1.8m or 55–80kg (women's M–L, men's S–M) | 73cm |
Both sizes have a 17cm-wide shoulder strap and suit pets up to 6kg. A shorter sling holds your dog higher on your chest, and a longer one lets them sit lower near your hip. If you're on the line between sizes, think about where you'd like your dog to sit. Still unsure? Email us your height and build at hello@apawfectplace.com.au and we'll help you choose.
Original or Mesh?
Both are kangaroo-style slings with a padded strap, a pocket for your phone or keys, and an inner safety clip. The difference is the fabric.
- Original Sling: thick, soft, padded fabric that feels like a hug. It's the cosy pick for cooler months and dogs who like to snuggle. Comes in Charcoal, Light Grey, Beige and Pink.
- Mesh Sling: breathable mesh with an extra shoulder pad. It's the pick for warm Aussie days, when airflow matters for you and your dog. Comes in Beige, Pink, Charcoal and Navy.

Safety tips
- Use the safety clip. Attach the inner clip to your dog's harness rather than their collar, so a sudden wriggle doesn't pull on their neck.
- Keep a hand underneath when you bend down, climb stairs or get in and out of cars.
- Head out, airflow in. Your dog's head should sit above the edge, with plenty of air around their face.
- Watch the heat. Your body warms the sling. On hot days keep outings short, choose mesh, and offer water often.
- Stay with them. Never leave your dog in a sling hung over a chair or door.
- Stick to the weight limit. Over 6kg, a sling won't support your dog properly or be comfortable for you.
Getting your dog used to the sling
- Leave the sling on the floor and let your dog sniff it. Reward them with a treat.
- Put it on, sit on the couch and lift your dog in. Give them lots of praise and a few treats, then lift them out after a minute or two.
- Walk around the house, then try a short trip to the letterbox.
- Build up to short outings, keeping them happy and stopping before your dog gets restless.
Puppies usually take to it fastest. Older or nervous dogs may need a few days of short, happy sessions.
Quick answers
Can I adjust the strap?
No. The strap is a fixed length, which is why choosing your size matters. Use the size table above.
Is it OK for cats?
Yes, for cats up to 6kg who are relaxed about being held. Use the safety clip on a harness.
How do I wash it?
Both slings are hand wash only. Use mild detergent in lukewarm water (below 25°C) and don't leave it soaking. Don't twist or wring it, and let it dry in shape.
